Orkney’s innovative companies build connections as part of local tech company’s gathering on the islands

Looking to the future at the Kyloe gathering

Kyloe Partners recently held their company-wide event, 'The Gathering 2022' in the Orkney Islands. After two years of working remotely due to COVID-19, this is the first time the Orkney headquartered technology company has been able to bring together its global employees in person since 2019. During this time, they have grown from 46 to 70 employees.

The company's 40 Orkney-based employees were joined by their colleagues from across the UK, the US and Australia to celebrate achievements and look to the future. The week-long event focused on themes relating to Kyloe's vision and values, including responsibility, technology and innovation, and caring for clients.

Collaboration between employees regardless of location sits at the heart of the ‘One Kyloe’ culture - a key
benefit for those attending was the opportunity to build face-to-face relationships with people they speak regularly with via video calls but have never met in real life.

Learning about new developing technologies in the renewables industry

As a recruitment technology company with over 1,200+ clients globally, Kyloe is one of Orkney's most innovative companies. On day three of The Gathering, employees were delighted to get the opportunity to meet with other local companies and learn about how they’re developing and supporting new technologies to drive progress within the renewables industry.

Their hosts for the day, Eileen Linklater (External Relationship Manager, EMEC), Gavin Barr (Managing Director, Aquatera) and John McGlynn (Executive Manager, ORIC), wowed the Kyloe team with a trip to the Mocean Energy Blue X wave energy machine at Hatston Pier and EMEC’s hydrogen fuel cell at Kirkwall Pier, as well as a tour of the Orkney Research & Innovation Campus (ORIC) in Stromness.

It was inspiring to get an insight into how EMEC, Aquatera, and ORIC are playing a crucial part in the development of innovative technologies within the renewables industry.

Although we work in different technology sectors, as companies we have lots in common – operating globally with most staff based in headquarters in Orkney. We are pioneering a new low carbon future here, and it’s exciting to show how we’re at the leading edge with projects demonstrating marine renewable energy, hydrogen and how they can play a role in our energy systems.”

A time for engagement, team building and celebration

When they weren’t touring around the island, the Kyloe team utilised The Albert Hotel, and The Pickaquoy Centre, as well as Custom House. The Gathering included creative and learning workshops, keynotes, industry interviews, Director Q&A sessions, and team building, including a challenging mind and fitness circuit designed by Katie Rafferty (Fitness, Health & Wellbeing Manager, The Pickaquoy Centre). The week was rounded off nicely with a dinner and awards ceremony at The Storehouse in Kirkwall on the final evening.
