April Fool’s or AI fool’s? How candidates are tricking recruiters

April Fool’s special: Fooling recruiters with AI (and how not to get caught!)

Written by Jayne Wogan

April Fool’s Day is the perfect time to talk about something that’s no joke: using AI to outsmart recruiters. With the rise of ChatGPT and AI-powered tools, candidates are getting creative in their job applications. But beware - recruiters are catching on!
In the spirit of good fun (and professional wisdom), let’s explore how job seekers might use AI to get ahead and what recruiters can do to stay one step forward..

How AI is helping candidates “fool” recruiters

  • AI-written CVs & cover letters – Why spend hours perfecting a CV when AI can generate one in seconds? AI can craft perfectly tailored applications, packed with all the right buzzwords. But if every applicant starts sounding the same, recruiters will know something’s up!

  • Automated interview prep – AI coaching tools can help candidates rehearse answers to common interview questions, making them sound polished and confident. But what happens when they go off-script?

  • Deepfake video resumes – Okay, this one’s still a little out there, but the idea of AI-enhanced video applications is very real. Imagine a candidate using an AI-generated voice or image to perfect their presentation—sounds futuristic, but it’s already happening!

  • AI-powered chatbots for follow-ups – Some job seekers are using AI-generated emails and messages to follow up with recruiters, making sure they stay on top of their game (without actually doing the work themselves).

How to spot the AI trickery

Recruiters, don’t be fooled! Here’s how you can spot AI-generated applications:

Overly polished responses – If a candidate’s cover letter reads like it was written by a corporate poet laureate, AI might be the culprit.

Lack of personal touch – AI can generate a great response, but it struggles with genuine, personal storytelling.

How candidates can avoid getting caught out

Let’s be honest - AI is a fantastic tool, but recruiters value authenticity. If you’re using AI, here’s how to make sure you don’t get flagged as a fraud:

  • Personalise everything – Use AI as a starting point, but add your own voice, experiences, and details to make your application unique.
  • Don’t over-automate – Follow-up emails are important, but recruiters can tell when they’re mass-generated. Keep it human!
  • Practice, don’t rely on AI – AI coaching tools can help you prepare, but in an actual interview, you need to be able to think on your feet.

Our advice to candidates, use AI to help you to present the very best (but real) version of yourself, but make sure you are still being authentic and truthful.
