I’ve just come back from a week in Milan and the mountains of Bormio and Livigno, watching short track speed skating, snowboard cross, big air and giant slalom up close.
From the stands, something kept jumping out at me. The same patterns that decide medals at the Winter Olympics are the patterns deciding whether AI implementations succeed or stall inside recruitment agencies.
It’s not about who has the flashiest kit. It’s about timing, sequencing, trust, preparation and execution under pressure.

One bad line choice and you're out, with your competitors right behind you ready to slip through.

Make it a differentiator, not just "we use AI too."

Most agencies measure AI tools in isolation - brilliant AI screening (run one), but rubbish ATS integration or recruiters who ignore the outputs (run two). Your combined time is terrible.
Stop measuring AI tools separately. Track the metric that actually matters end to end - time to placement, margin per role, candidate quality. If AI shortens longlisting by three days but your interview scheduling is still manual chaos adding five days back, you're losing on combined time.

The British pair didn't qualify individually. They weren't the fastest or most technically gifted on their own. But combined, they read each other perfectly - she was tactical and consistent, he was aggressive when it counted. Together they won gold.
That's your AI and human team. AI alone won't beat the competition - it's not qualified to run your recruitment process solo. Humans alone are getting beaten on speed and scale. But the combination? That's where you win gold. Define what AI does best - speed, consistency, data processing - and what your recruiters do best - judgment, relationships, complex negotiation. Then choreograph them together, with transitions so fluid there's no lag and total trust in each other's contribution.
